Download Parent’s Guide for Video
Games, Online Safety
Video games can
be a great source of entertainment and learning for the
whole family, but it’s important for parents to fully
appreciate what the experience of playing games today
encompasses. Many include features that go beyond the game
play itself, and include social and interactive elements
like online chat with other players. As parents, it is up to
us to be informed and to make smart choices when it comes to
the games we allow our children to play.
Do your homework. It is up to parents to research the video
games their children want to play and use this information
to decide what is appropriate.
Play the games with your child. If you aren’t interested in
playing the games, be an active observer for the first few
weeks your child is playing a new game.
Set ground rules. It is important that you have a
conversation with each child to set rules and limits that
are appropriate for him or her.

parents needs to know about cell phones, the Internet,
movies, music, television and video games.
PTA has partnered with the Entertainment Software Rating
Board (ESRB) to produce A Parent’s Guide to Video Games:
Parental Controls and Online Safety, a guide full of the
information that parents need to know about video games.
Copies of the English- and Spanish-language versions of the
guide can be downloaded from
pta.org/mediasafety.
