Parental Information and Resource Centers (PIRC)
This is a
FEDERAL ALERT which will have a direct impact on parental involvement.
Florida PTA has actively supported parental involvement and research has
proven its benefits.
The Obama Administration has
proposed in its 2011 budget request, the consolidation and proposed
elimination of the Parental Information and Recourse Centers (PIRCs).
There are two PIRCs in
Florida.
The goals of the PIRCs are
as follows:
1.
Promote family involvement in education through partnerships.
2.
Provide information, training and support for families and educators to
increase families' awareness of education issues and increase educators'
awareness of the issues that impact family involvement of at-risk
families or hard-to-reach families
This proposal, if passed,
will negatively impact PTAs, schools and parents as PIRCs are the only
dedicated funding source for family engagement.
ACTION:
Please call your U.S.
Senators and Representatives NOW to let them know that you, as a
constituent, and Florida PTA OPPOSE the consolidation and/or elimination
of the Parental Information Resource Centers (PIRCs), as they are the
only funding stream that directly supports family engagement. There is
no question that family engagement is the major factor in student
success. It would be penny- wise and a pound foolish to eliminate or
redirect these funds.
