SB 6 the
Teacher Pay
bill
narrowly
passed the
House and
Senate and
is on its
way to the
Governor.
Please email
or call the
Governor and
request him
to veto the
bill.
PTA supports
higher
standards
and
accountability.
We believe
all students
benefit from
and should
have access
to
high-quality
teachers.
PTA does not
have a
specific
position on
how teacher
salaries are
determined.
However,
many of the
provisions
in SB 6,
both
budgetary
and most
important of
all, the
impact it
may have on
the students
of Florida
are of
concern to
us. The
negatives in
the bill far
outweigh the
positives.
According to
the Florida
Department
of
Education,
under Senate
Bill 6, more
than 50
percent of
classroom
teachers'
evaluations
will be
based on
demonstrated
student
growth of
students
assigned to
the teacher,
and more
than 50
percent of a
principal's
evaluation
will be
based on
demonstrated
student
growth of
students
assigned to
his or her
school.
The
assessments
on which
these
decisions
will be made
are yet to
be developed
and the bill
places the
responsibility
for
developing
these tests
on the
shoulders of
the school
district by
holding back
5% of the
FEFP
allocation
per
district.
Districts
are mandated
to use that
5% to
develop
these tests.
If the
expense
exceeds the
5% holdback,
the district
will have to
fund it
themselves.
For these
and other
reasons PTA
would like
the
Legislature
to go back
to the
drawing
board and
draft a new
bill with
collaboration
from
parents,
educators
and
teachers,
that will
bring real
reform and
high
standards to
the
profession.
Please call

or email the
Governor and
ask him to
veto the
bill. If you

Message
PTA supports
accountability
and higher
standards
for
educators,
but this
bill heavily
impacts
students and
increases
the
financial
burden on
school
districts.
We ask that
you veto
this bill so
that the
Legislature
can draft a
new version
which will
include
parents,
students and
educators in
the process
and bring
real reform
and
excellence
in teaching
to our
public
schools.
Thank You
